Class Descriptions
NEW Beginner Program
Starting November 1st
Our new Beginner Program will offer continuing enrollment each month. The Program includes two classes per week, an aikido uniform and membership into the US Aikido Federation. This program is designed for Adults and Teens (13 and older) to teach basic movements required for practical self defense. After two months, the student will be able to apply self defense techniques, and will also have a foundation to continue in more advance aikido studies.
Young Samurai (Tuesdays, Winter Session 1 starts January 5th)
The Young Samurai class is designed to teach children, ages 6-12, basic aikido in a fun and playful setting. Class will include tumbling, simple aikido techniques that have
practical and proven self-defense methods. Aikido nurtures cooperative behaviors in class that aid children
in dealing with daily life challenges without the use of competition and
tournaments.
Adult Basics and Mixed Level Class
The basic premise of Aikido is that the mind and body act together. The movements of Aikido are designed to coordinate the defending and attacking bodies so that the force of attack can be diverted harmlesssly and redirected. In this way, Aikido harmonizes all motion in a positive way instead of trying to conflict with or stop aggression. Aikido students gain a deeper knowledge of many aspects of themselves. They learn concentration and relaxation; they develop sensitivity, coordination and perception; they build stamina and self-confidence as well as maintain cardiovascular fitness. Through serious Aikido training, one develops the ability to respond positively to any stressful situation.
Aikido classes consist of:
1) stretching and loosening exercises;
2) meditation for concentration and calmness;
3) techniques of self-defense; and
4) points of Aikido philosophy.
Weapons
The aikido curriculum includes work with bokken (wooden sword), jo (short staff) and tanto (knife). While other classes may include work with these weapons, the weapons class specifically focuses on the basic uses of these weapons with single and paired katas. All students - even beginning students - are encouraged to attend this class.
Iaido
Iaido is a Japanese martial art associated with smooth, controlled movements of drawing the sword from its scabbard, striking or cutting an opponent, removing blood from the blade, and then replacing the sword in the scabbard. This class requires strong mental focus. Because this class uses live blade, students must be 18 years or older, and permission is required for visitors and class participation.
